I hope this newsletter finds each of you well during this frantic time of the year between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is hard to believe that 2015 is almost over.

Our big news is that Colorado POST has a new website, coloradopost.gov. After many, many, months of planning and preparation, the new POST website is up and running. This has been a project that has taken over a year and involved countless people. Some of the website highlights are:

  • The News & Updates section in the middle, right of the home page will change periodically as new information needs to be disseminated.
  • Each of the most frequently visited pages has their own large button at the bottom of the home page.
  • The Training Calendar is new and improved. There will soon be filters added for increased searches, such as by course title, location, date, instructor and region. There is also a keyword search.
  • All of the photography was done by our own POST employee, Tom Mullin, during his travels throughout Colorado.

I encourage you to go to the website and give us your feedback. I expect there to be some minor corrections made as we navigate through this initial phase.

POST staff also has new email addresses. The new format is firstname.lastname@coag.gov.

POST Rule 28 has to do with the annual in-service training program. I have explained the rule in previous newsletters and other documents so I will use this newsletter to explain the timeline for compliance reporting.

  • Training periods are annually, beginning on January 1 and ending on December 31.
  • I will put out a preliminary compliance report in January, 2016.
  • Agencies not in compliance will have 30 days from the date of that report to provide additional training documentation.
  • After that 30-day period, I will distribute a final compliance report, on or about March 1, 2016.
  • Agencies not in compliance in the final report may appeal to the POST Board, pursuant to Rule 5.
  • Agencies not in compliance in the final report will have POST funding suspended for the period of July 1, 2016 through December 31, 2016.
  • The POST Board will evaluate this program annually.

POST Rule 17 states that:

  1. Every POST certificate holder shall keep current his or her name, home address, mailing address, email address, home telephone number, or cellphone number through the POST portal.
  2. When any person is appointed or separated as a certified peace officer, as per Rules 10, 11 and 12, such agency shall submit an update through the POST portal within fifteen (15) days of such appointment or separation.
  3. By the 31st of January of each year, each agency shall verify the accuracy of the certified peace officers associated with the law enforcement agency listed on the POST portal by submitting an email to POST.

I ask that each of you please update your agency records, per Rule 17, so that our records are as accurate as possible. Please contact Lori Jencks for assistance with this at lori.jencks@coag.gov or 720-508-6721.

POST is updating our training records as they pertain to SFST, SFST Instructors, ARIDE, DRE and DRE Instructors. Please have your training personnel directly enter this employee information into the POST portal. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact Carolyn Berry at carolyn.berry@coag.gov or 720-508-6725.

POST would also like to add members to each of our subject matter expert (SME) committees. The four SME Committees are curriculum, arrest control, driving and firearms. The term of commitment is one year with an automatic renewal each December, provided the SME member stays in good standing with their agency and the POST Board. SME committee members do not have to be currently employed with a law enforcement agency, but each member must have law enforcement expertise or expertise in providing effective training through professional experience or subject matter training and meet the requirements for membership on the Committee to which they are applying. Membership requirements as well as information about each Committee and the SME Application can be found on the POST website at http://www.coloradopost.gov/about-post/sme-committees. If you know of someone that has such an interest, please contact Cristine Mack at cristine.mack@coag.gov or 720-508-6731.

On January 13, 2016, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., POST will be hosting a webinar teleconference regarding the FY2016-2017 grant cycle. We encourage anyone with an interest in how and where the training regions might be spending their future grant dollars to tune in for this. It will be a question-and-answer format. Watch for more emails with specifics for this event. POST will be contacting training regions to schedule a block of time for their region. If you have questions, please send an email to postgrants@coag.gov and POST will respond with registration information.

The POST staff wishes each of you, and your entire agencies, the safest and happiest of holiday seasons. We have enjoyed working with you over the past year and we look forward to a continued partnership in 2016.
